Last week I had the pleasure of moderating an important panel at the TONIK event in the Faroe Islands titled:
“How do we make fishery and aquaculture ready for the future?”
On Stage with me were two highly respected voices in the sector:
Johan Christiansen, Minister of Fisheries and Infrastructure of the Faroe Islands
Árni M. Mathiesen, former Minister of Fisheries in Iceland and Senior Ocean Expert & Global Aquaculture Leader
We explored the critical need to manage fish stocks responsibly and regeneratively, while addressing the growing global demand for food. Johan emphasized that humans are part of the ecosystem — and that sustainability strategies must consider both environmental integrity and human wellbeing.
Both gentlemen shared compelling examples of how marine ecosystems can recover quickly when given time and space. Árni underscored the importance of data monitoring that blends digital innovation with the irreplaceable intuition of those who live and work with the ocean.
Among other topics, we discussed nature-based and regenerative solutions, such as seaweed forests and multi-trophic aquaculture systems that reflect natural cycles and interdependencies. We also touched on the need to shift away from land-based fish feed production, and instead better harness ocean-based food sources — keeping the nutrient cycle within the element it belongs to.
My sincere thanks to both panelists for their openness, insight, and leadership. It was an honour to moderate this timely conversation on one of the Nordics’ most vital and future-relevant sectors.
